Ever since I moved to the southernmost tip of Cebu, I rarely go to the city anymore. The noise, the traffic, the sheer energy of it all. Sometimes it's a bit too much. But every now and then, I find myself back in the heart of it, and every visit feels like I'm rediscovering a place I used to call home.
It's funny, really. I once knew the ins and outs of this city like the back of my hand, and now I feel like a wide-eyed tourist every time I visit. So, I make my stay an adventure, depending on my mood.
Sometimes, I check into a fancy hotel for a solo staycation. Other times, I choose hostels to meet people from all walks of life. And then there are those calm, cozy moments when I just want to wake up to the smell of bacon and coffee in a charming bed and breakfast.
When you're planning a city break, figuring out where to sleep is half the adventure. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. Your ideal digs might depend on your budget, who you’re traveling with, or just how social (or anti-social) you’re feeling.
So if you’re wondering where to crash in the concrete jungle, here are seven types of accommodation to keep in mind.
1. Hostels
I rarely stay at hostels. If I have more money to spare, I usually steer clear. But let’s be real, hostels have a certain energy that’s hard to replicate. There’s something about meeting people from all walks of life, of all ages, under one roof that makes hostels feel like their own little universe. Some of my most interesting interactions during solo trips happened in hostels, over shared dinners, or during random conversations in the lounge.
If you’re introverted like me, my tip is to find a hostel with private rooms or smaller dorms — 4 beds max. It gives you the social vibe without the overwhelm.
2. Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs)
Let me just say it: bed and breakfasts are my absolute favorite. One of my life goals is to build one someday, because there's just something magical about them. The food culture alone makes them stand out. Where else can you wake up to the comforting smell of bacon, freshly brewed coffee, and homemade pastries?
The atmosphere is also quieter, more relaxed than hostels or big hotels. It's like staying at a friend’s cozy home, except with better breakfasts.
3. Hotels
Back in my early travel days, I used to avoid hotels. I always thought, "Why spend so much when it’s just a place to sleep? I’d rather use that money for food or experiences."
But now that I’m in my 30s, oh boy, has my perspective changed.
Give me peace and quiet. Give me fluffy pillows and that glorious thing called room service. I now find myself gravitating towards hotel staycations more often when I’m in the city. Sometimes, staying at a hotel is THE TRIP.
4. Serviced Apartments
When I’m staying in the city for a longer period, serviced apartments are my go-to. I love that it feels like a home away from home, but with some of the perks of a hotel. You get a kitchen, maybe even a washing machine, and the space to just... exist comfortably.
It’s ideal if you want to cook your own meals, do your own laundry, and still sleep on a bed that someone else made.
5. Vacation Rentals
Whenever I travel with my group of friends, vacation rentals are the default. They offer that sweet mix of privacy, space, and a touch of luxury. We can cook together, hang out in a living room, and not worry about disturbing neighbors through thin hotel walls.
It feels more like living in the city than just visiting it.
6. Homestays
If you want a truly immersive experience, nothing beats a homestay accommodation. I've done a few in the past and always came away with new knowledge — be it cooking techniques, language tidbits, or just insights into everyday life in that place.
7. Capsule Hotels
I’ve only stayed in a capsule hotel once in Cebu City. I’ll admit, it’s not really my thing. But I do appreciate the privacy it offers, even if you're technically sharing the same room with a dozen other people. It’s a quirky, minimalist experience that’s definitely worth trying at least once.
So next time you're planning a city escape, remember: you’ve got options. Whether you're looking for a cozy nest, a social hub, or a futuristic pod, there’s a bed out there with your name on it.
